How periodontal treatment and gum disease
treatment work — step-by-step process

Step 01

Step 02

Step 03

Step 04

Step 05

Step 06

Step 01

01

Step 1 — Initial periodontist consultation and periodontal disease diagnosis

Your periodontal journey starts with a thorough assessment by our periodontist. We conduct a detailed oral examination, measure periodontal pockets with a periodontal probe, take diagnostic images, and check your gum tissue, dental plaque buildup, and overall oral hygiene. This helps us determine the stage of gum disease and any factors that may contribute, such as poor brushing technique or dental restorations that need adjustment.
Step 02

02

Step 2 — Personalized treatment of periodontal disease plan

Based on your diagnosis, our periodontist creates a personalized treatment plan. This plan outlines the specific procedures needed, whether nonsurgical periodontal therapy, scaling and root planing, closed curettage, or surgical treatment. It also includes a timeline for each phase of treatment, clear instructions for home oral care, and straightforward cost information. You’ll know every step of your gum disease treatment before we start.
Step 03

03

Step 3 — Professional gum disease treatment: deep cleaning of gums and periodontal therapy

Most patients begin with a professional deep cleaning of the gums by cleaning the periodontal pockets. During scaling and root planing, we remove dental plaque from below the gum line and smooth the surfaces of the dental roots to reduce sensitivity. This procedure is done comfortably with local anesthesia. For early-stage gum disease, this nonsurgical periodontal therapy often works well and halts disease progression.
Step 04

04

Step 4 — Surgical treatment for advanced periodontitis and periodontal tissues

If you have severe gum disease with deep gum pockets or significant gum recession, we may suggest closed curettage to clean infected gum tissues, gum graft surgery to restore lost gum tissue and protect exposed roots, or other surgical treatments to restore bone and ligament support around affected teeth. We use different treatment methods that fit your specific periodontal condition.
Step 05

05

Step 5 — Healing and tissue regeneration

After treatment, your gums heal naturally. We check your progress during follow-up appointments. We look for improvements like reduced gum inflammation, shallower periodontal pockets, and healthy periodontal tissues. During this period, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene. Use gentle brushing, dental floss, and any prescribed antimicrobial rinses to help ensure successful results.
Step 06

06

Step 6 — Long-term periodontal maintenance therapy

Gum disease is a long-lasting condition that needs continuous care. We set up a personalized maintenance schedule, usually with professional cleanings every 3 to 6 months, to stop gum disease from coming back. Regular dental check-ups help us spot any early signs of inflammation, provide professional cleaning, reinforce good oral hygiene practices, and keep your teeth and gums healthy for the long run.

The Dynasty Stomatology team at Romanowicza 4B were incredibly welcoming from the moment I arrived. The receptionist was a clear and helpful communicator whose English was excellent, and my professional hygiene appointment with Anastasiia was the best I’ve had. She gave clear explanations throughout, anticipated my questions both before and after the procedure, and her genuine care for her patients’ dental health was evident in the guidance she provided. She also managed to make a 1.5-hour appointment completely free of discomfort. Today’s experience (the first of several appointments I’ve scheduled with Dynasty) gives me confidence in the decision to travel here for dental care. Edit from follow-on appointments: No substantive change from my initial review, beyond even more positive thoughts. I should similarly point out how fantastic Michael (apologies for anglicized spelling) was, not only for his expertise in radiography, but his friendly willingness to help communicate with other dental professionals at the clinic (Dynasty serve many nationalities and have many polyglots on staff, but not everyone can speak everything!) when he wasn't busy operating their CT. Most importantly of all, Dr. Rafal Kazanecki – he was not only fantastic in the clinic, but has been wonderful and very dedicated despite my not residing in Krakow, helping direct me in dental affairs remotely during a few-month window I've been unable to travel. Now a few months in, I feel that my initial confidence and positive view of the practice was well-placed, and look forward to being able to continue with Dr. Kazanecki at Dynasty.

A very pleasant dental clinic. There are many doctors, including narrow specialists such as surgeons, and they have their own CT scanner. The clinic was founded by Ukrainians, so in addition to Polish, Ukrainian and Russian are also spoken, which makes it more comfortable for people of Ukrainian origin. Another plus is its convenient location close to the city center.

What is Dental Splinting and How It Can Save a Loose Tooth?

Loose teeth in adults are often a sign that something important is changing in your mouth. This causes a lot of discomfort and further problems, interferes with speaking and chewing, and, unfortunately, can lead to tooth loss. However, there is a procedure called teeth splinting, which can strengthen the tooth and prevent further damage or […]

Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral health issues worldwide, affecting millions of people and often developing silently over time. Understanding the causes, recognizing early symptoms, and exploring effective treatment options are essential for maintaining a healthy smile […]

What is Periodontology – What Does a Periodontist Do?

Periodontology focuses on the health of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It plays a crucial role in preventing and treating gum diseases that can affect overall oral health. Understanding the importance of this dental specialty helps maintain strong teeth and gums throughout life. What is Periodontics? Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that […]

  • Frequently asked questions about
    periodontal disease treatment and gum
    care

    • What does the first visit to a periodontist look like?

Your first appointment includes an oral exam. The periodontist uses a tool called a periodontal probe to measure the depth of gum pockets around each tooth. We look for signs of gum inflammation, like redness, swelling, and bleeding. We might take digital images to check bone levels. The periodontist will talk about your symptoms, go over your oral hygiene habits, and explain the stage of gum disease if it’s present. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your gum health and a personalized treatment plan that outlines the costs.

    • Can smoking affect the success of periodontal treatment?

Yes, smoking significantly impairs periodontal treatment outcomes. Tobacco use reduces blood flow to the gums, weakens the immune response to bacterial infection, slows healing after procedures like scaling and root planing or gum graft surgery, and increases the risk of disease progression and treatment failure. Smokers are 2-3 times more likely to develop advanced periodontitis and experience less predictable results from periodontal therapy. Quitting smoking dramatically improves treatment success and long-term gum health.

    • What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease characterized by gum inflammation, redness, swelling, and bleeding gums during brushing or flossing. It affects only the gum tissue and is completely reversible with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene. Periodontitis is advanced gum disease where inflammation has spread deeper, damaging the periodontal ligament and bone that support the teeth. It creates deep periodontal pockets, causes gum recession, and can lead to tooth loss if untreated. Unlike gingivitis, periodontitis causes permanent damage to periodontal tissues, though the disease process can be stopped with appropriate treatment.

    • What are the main causes of periodontal diseases?

The primary cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of dental plaque — a sticky bacterial film that forms along the gum line. When plaque hardens into tartar, it irritates gum tissue and triggers inflammation. Other contributing factors include overzealous, hard brushing with incorrect technique or the wrong toothbrush that damages gums, improperly restored contact points between teeth, large gaps, fillings with overhangs, and lack of proper tooth anatomy for hygiene, teeth inadequately treated endodontically that harbor infection, improperly executed prosthetic restorations that trap plaque, smoking and tobacco use, genetic predisposition, diabetes and immune system disorders, hormonal changes, certain medications that reduce saliva flow, and poor oral hygiene habits. Addressing these risk factors is essential for successful periodontal treatment.

    • What are the consequences of untreated periodontal disease?

Untreated gum disease leads to progressive destruction of the periodontal tissues that support your teeth. Consequences include deepening periodontal pockets that harbor bacteria, continued gum recession exposing sensitive root surfaces, loss of bone around the teeth, increased tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss, painful infections and abscesses, difficulty chewing and changes in nutrition, negative impacts on appearance and self-confidence, increased risk of systemic health problems including heart disease and diabetes complications, and higher overall dental treatment costs as the condition worsens. The good news is that even advanced periodontal disease can be treated successfully when you seek care from an experienced periodontist. Early intervention always yields better outcomes.

    • How do I care for my gums after periodontal treatment?

Maintenance after periodontal treatment is crucial for long-term success. Follow these guidelines: brush gently twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and proper technique to clean along the gum line without causing trauma, use dental floss or interdental brushes daily to clean between teeth where gum pockets formed, rinse with any prescribed antimicrobial mouthwash as directed, avoid smoking and tobacco products that compromise healing, attend all scheduled periodontal maintenance therapy appointments (typically every 3-4 months), watch for any returning symptoms such as bleeding gums or gum swelling, maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins that support gum tissue healing, manage stress and systemic conditions like diabetes that affect gum health, and communicate promptly with your periodontist if you notice any changes. With proper care and regular professional monitoring, treated gum disease can remain stable for many years.

    • Is periodontal disease hereditary?

While genetics can influence your susceptibility to gum disease, periodontitis is primarily caused by bacterial accumulation and the body’s inflammatory response. Some people have a genetic predisposition that increases disease risk, but proper oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and professional periodontal care can significantly reduce this risk. Even with family history, most cases of periodontal disease can be prevented or successfully managed with appropriate treatment and maintenance.

    • How often should I visit a periodontist for check-ups?

After completing active periodontal treatment, most patients need periodontal maintenance therapy every 3-4 months. This is more frequent than regular dental check-ups because treated gum disease requires closer monitoring to prevent recurrence. During maintenance visits, the periodontist performs professional cleaning of periodontal pockets, checks for any signs of gum inflammation returning, measures pocket depths with a periodontal probe, and reinforces proper oral hygiene techniques. Your specific schedule depends on the severity of your initial condition and how well you maintain oral hygiene at home.

    • Can periodontal treatment improve overall health?

Yes, treating periodontal disease can positively impact your overall health. Research shows strong links between gum inflammation and systemic conditions. Successful periodontal treatment may reduce inflammation markers associated with heart disease, help improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes, lower the risk of stroke and cardiovascular events, reduce complications during pregnancy, and decrease systemic inflammation throughout the body. The bacteria that cause gum disease can enter the bloodstream and affect distant organs. By eliminating periodontal infection and maintaining healthy gums, you’re protecting both your oral health and your general well-being.

    • When should I see a periodontist, and what are the warning signs?

You should schedule a periodontist consultation if you notice reddening of the gums, swelling of the gums or gum inflammation, bleeding of the gums, either spontaneously or during flossing and brushing, tooth mobility or teeth feeling loose, painful biting or discomfort when chewing, exposure of dental necks or gum recession, tooth overhangs or tilting, changes in the oral mucosa such as nodules or recurrent aphthae, persistent bad breath, changes in your bite or the way teeth fit together, or pus between teeth and gums. These symptoms of gum disease require professional evaluation. Early detection and treatment of periodontal disease is crucial to prevent advanced periodontitis and tooth loss.

    • How does the treatment of gum diseases vary by condition type?

The treatment of gum diseases varies significantly based on the severity of the disease and individual patient factors. Early-stage conditions may require only professional dental plaque removal, and improved oral hygiene, and regular dental check-ups. As the disease progresses, we may use different treatment methods, including deep cleaning of the gums, periodontal pocket cleaning, or gum pocket treatment through closed curettage. Advanced cases of periodontal disease may need surgical periodontal treatment or gum graft surgery. Our periodontist evaluates the development of periodontal diseases in your specific case to determine the most appropriate treatment approach. Treatment can help at any stage, though early intervention always yields the best results and helps prevent complications that gum disease can cause.

    • What are the common side effects after gum treatment?

One common side effect of gum treatment is temporary increased sensitivity of the dental root surfaces, particularly to cold temperatures. This occurs because procedures like scaling and root planing expose previously covered root surfaces during dental plaque removal and deep cleaning of the gums. Another potential side effect of gum treatment is minor gum tissue shrinkage as inflammation resolves and tissues heal to a healthier state. These effects are typically temporary and indicate that your gums are responding well to treatment. The greater sensitivity usually diminishes within a few weeks as the treated areas adapt. Your periodontist will provide guidance on managing any discomfort during the healing period to ensure successful treatment outcomes.
