Fluoridation of teeth in children

Fluoridation of teeth in children

Dental caries in children develop rapidly, especially if the enamel is weak and hygiene is inadequate. Many parents are faced with the fact that even regular brushing of teeth does not save from the appearance of dark stains and destruction. Fluoridation of children's teeth is an effective method of prevention, which helps to strengthen the enamel, make it more resistant to acids and external damage.

Fluoride-containing preparations help strengthen tooth enamel by increasing its mineral density, making it more resistant to mechanical wear and the harmful effects of acids and bacteria.

The application of dental sealants significantly reduces the risk of cavities and other oral health issues, particularly in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth where thorough cleaning can be challenging.

Methods of fluoridation of teeth in children

The method of enamel treatment is selected individually depending on the condition of the teeth, the age of the child and the degree of mineralization. Modern pediatric dentistry uses several effective methods:

  1. Simple fluoridation. A special fluoride gel, paste or varnish is applied to the teeth, which strengthens the enamel and protects it from decay. The procedure is quick and painless.
  2. Treatment with the use of mouth guards. An individual silicone mouth guard is used, inside which a preparation containing fluoride is placed. It is put on the teeth for a few minutes, ensuring even saturation of enamel.
  3. Deep remineralization. Involves a combination of fluoride and calcium to restore enamel structure. Deep dental fluoridation is used when there is severe demineralization or increased tooth sensitivity.

After an examination, our doctor will choose the optimal method of fluoridation of baby teeth, if they need additional protection.

    What is dental fluoridation?

Fluoridation is a preventive dental procedure aimed at strengthening tooth enamel using preparations containing fluoride. As a result, it significantly reduces the risk of tooth decay.

One of the causes of weakened enamel in children may be a deficiency of fluoride in the body, especially if there is insufficient fluoride in drinking water. Frequent colds, unbalanced nutrition, impaired metabolism and genetic predisposition also have a negative impact. All this makes teeth vulnerable to decay and requires additional protection – fluoridation.

The essence of the method is the application of a special composition (gel, varnish or solution) to the surface of the teeth, which penetrates into the deep layers of enamel and saturates it with fluoride ions.

Fluoridation is performed on both baby teeth and permanent teeth:

    1. Baby teeth are particularly vulnerable to decay due to their thin enamel. Remineralization of tooth enamel helps protect them during the period of active growth and bite formation.
    2. Permanent teeth need to be strengthened immediately after eruption, when the enamel is not yet fully mineralized.

Thus, the procedure is effective and relevant at all stages of a child’s tooth development.

    Why fluoridate baby teeth?

Baby teeth have thinner and more vulnerable enamel, so they are particularly susceptible to decay and mechanical damage. Fluoridation helps to:

The procedure of fluoridation of children’s teeth creates a protective barrier, which is especially important during the period of active growth and formation of the bite.

    Contraindications

Fluoridation of baby teeth is a safe procedure, but in some cases it is not recommended:

Before performing the manipulation, the dentist is sure to assess the general health and oral cavity of the child to make it safe and keep the teeth not only healthy, but also beautiful.

Benefits of Fluoridation of Baby Teeth

Fluoridation is one of the most popular preventive procedures in pediatric dentistry. Not only is it safe, but it also effectively protects baby teeth during the period of active formation and growth.

The main advantages of the method:

    1. Sensitivity reduction. Closes microcracks and thereby reduces the reaction of teeth to cold, hot and sour, making eating more comfortable.
    2. Quick and painless. The dental fluoridation procedure takes a few minutes, requires no anesthesia, and is stress-free for your child.

How the procedure is done at Dynasty Stomatology

Tooth fluoridation for children is quick, accurate and in a comfortable environment. Our specialists use only certified preparations and modern methods.

    Stages of the procedure:

    1. Examination and assessment of the condition of the teeth. At this stage, the doctor determines whether fluoridation or caries treatment is needed in a particular case, excludes contraindications to the procedure.
    2. Professional cleaning of teeth to remove plaque and calculus.
    3. Drying of teeth and isolation from saliva.
    4. Treatment of teeth with fluoride (in the form of gel, varnish or solution).
    5. Waiting 1-4 minutes for absorption.

Fluoridation can be performed either on the entire tooth row for general enamel weakness or on individual teeth spot-on if the child has localized areas of demineralization or sensitivity.

After the procedure, the doctor will give recommendations for care at home. You should not eat or drink for 30 minutes after treatment.

How often is it recommended to repeat fluoridation?

Teeth fluoridation should be performed approximately 1-2 times a year. The frequency of the procedure can vary depending on individual factors – the condition of the teeth, the risk of tooth decay, and the dentist’s recommendations. In some cases, treatment may be prescribed more frequently – up to 3-4 times a year if you are prone to tooth decay. It is best to coordinate the schedule of procedures with the doctor to achieve maximum effectiveness and safety.

The cost of fluoridation of teeth in children

The price of the procedure depends on the amount of work and the selected preparation, method of treatment. For example, the cost of deep fluoridation will be slightly higher compared to a simple coating. In any case, our dentistry offers affordable prices for all services, including remineralization.

For an accurate estimate and customized preventive care plan, schedule a consultation with a Dynasty Stomatology pediatric dentist. We perform dental fluoridation on young children of different ages and find an approach to everyone, turning each procedure into a positive experience for the patient.
